SUMMARY:Visual Gestural Communication Workshop
DESCRIPTION:May 18\, 2026 in Presque Isle\, ME from 9am-12pm\nDRM is hosting a FREE Visual-Gestural Communication workshop in Presque Isle on May 18\, from 9am-12pm. Join us! Register by emailing deafservices@drme.org or by filling out the online registration form. \nPLEASE NOTE that this is a new address for this workshop! Previously\, we planned to hold this training in Caribou. It will now be held in Presque Isle at the Sargent Family Community Center. \nAttendees are welcome to stay afterwards and take part in another free event – Less Talk More Action: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Resources in Aroostook County. \nWhat is VGC? VGC is useful to anyone who needs an alternative technique for expressing and understanding the wants and needs of other people in their environment. VGC is a communication mode\, rather than a formal language like English\, ASL or French. It uses gestures\, facial expressions\, and body language. Many individuals who cannot communicate effectively using either a spoken language like English\, or a formal signed language like ASL\, will be able to communicate more effectively using natural gestures. \nThis training is excellent for family members\, case managers\, direct support professionals\, and others. All are welcome. In our classes\, we help you to think visually and conceptually\, and to use Visual-Gestural Communication to communicate more effectively\, including with people with limited formal language.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Ride Ahead - Maine Jewish Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Film Description:\nSamuel Habib is a typical 21-year-old from New Hampshire\, itching to move out\, start a career\, and find love. But no one tells you how to be an adult\, let alone an adult with a disability. Can a community of disability activists help him follow his dreams? \nThe film follows Samuel Habib\, whose goals are pretty typical for a 21-year-old. Moving out of his family’s home. College. Establishing his career. Dating. Sex. Yet every rite of passage is fraught with challenges. Unexpected seizures and uncontrollable movements caused by his rare genetic disorder. Friends’ homes that are inaccessible to his wheelchair. His labored speech and use of a communication device are barriers to a social life. He craves more independence and a family of his own one day. “But no one tells you how to be an adult\,” he says\, “let alone an adult with a disability.” Samuel is determined to avoid the statistical realities: unemployment\, isolation\, institutionalization. A turning point comes when he starts talking to disabled adults\, who have been through all he is going through now. And when he begins to channel their insights\, a roadmap for himself\, and for other young adults like him\, begins to take shape. \nAbout The Maine Jewish Film Festival:\nThe Maine Jewish Film Festival celebrates filmmaking—inspiring conversation through the lens of global Jewish experience. Innovative programming invites a diverse statewide audience into the dialogue. As one of Maine’s premier cultural organizations\, we pursue partnerships and collaborations with other cultural and community organizations across the state. For more information about MJFF\, please visit www.mjff.org \nAccessibility Information:\nThe film includes open captions. The venue is accessible for wheelchairs/mobility impaired persons. Please note that there is limited handicapped-accessible parking at the venue. Guests are asked to plan accordingly. \nTickets are $15. For more information\, email mjffdirector@gmail.com or call 202-419-9952.

SUMMARY:HCBS Town Hall - Individuals and Families – Older Adults and Adults with Physical Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced the Ensuring Access to Medicaid Services Rule (Access Rule). This new rule is designed to make it easier for people to access home and community-based services (HCBS) and to improve the quality of these services. If you receive personal care\, homemaker\, home health services\, or habilitation services such as home support\, work support\, or community support\, this applies to you. The goal is to help people who receive Medicaid HCBS services have better lives and outcomes. \nAt this time\, DHHS would like to invite you to a town hall session to discuss the new CMS Access Rule and its requirements. We will explain the rule\, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on the rule. As part of our planning\, it’s also important for us to hear from you around what is working well and where we can improve. This town hall is the first of several opportunities for you to give input that will help us create a plan to follow the new rule. Please note\, the rule includes elements about other medical services that will be addressed separately by the Office of MaineCare Services (OMS). This session will focus specifically on HCBS programs offered by the Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS). \nRegister today!
