SUMMARY:Accessing Democracy: Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Disability Rights Maine for a film screening\, followed by a panel discussion about the importance of voting.\nFilm Summary: \nMonica Wiley\, a Black disabled woman\, travels the East Coast interviewing voters with disabilities. She asks them about the barriers they face\, from accessing the everyday conveniences that able-bodied people take as a given to the inability to receive the services they need to work and be a part of the community. Produced by the National Disability Rights Network in partnership with Disability Rights New York. Directed by Jack Rosen. \nAfter the film\, join a panel discussion featuring Secretary of State Shenna Bellows\, and disability advocates Eric McVay\, Jenny McCarthy\, and Molly Thompson. \nCheck out the trailer for “Accessing Democracy” a documentary short focused on telling politicians what they don’t know about the disability community. The film follows Monica Wiley as she travels the East Coast interviewing fellow voters with disabilities. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Dark Secrets: The Terrible Truth About Elder Abuse in the Family
DESCRIPTION:Brooke Astor\, wealthy New York philanthropist\, writer\, and socialite\, was recognized for her generosity towards those less fortunate. While she spent most of the year working in New York\, each summer she refueled at her beloved home in Northeast Harbor\, Maine. \nBrooke Astor is also known for something else\, something far more sinister. In her later years\, Mrs. Astor was abused—isolated\, deprived\, manipulated\, and exploited—by her only child who gained control of millions of dollars that she had bequeathed to charities. It was her grandson\, Philip Marshall\, who\, with the help of many concerned persons and law enforcement\, saved his grandmother. \nJoin AARP Maine & Legal Services for Maine Elders to hear Philip Marshall tell his story and to participate in an on-site Maine Calling Maine Public radio program immediately following. A light lunch will be available at 12:15. \nThursday\, June 20th | 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Husson University’s Gracie Theatre \nYou can also attend Mr. Marshall’s keynote address virtually on Zoom \nThis event is free\, but registration is required. \nFor more information and to register\, visit: states.aarp.org/maine/elder-abuse
