SUMMARY:Accessing Democracy: Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Disability Rights Maine for a film screening\, followed by a panel discussion about the importance of voting.\nFilm Summary: \nMonica Wiley\, a Black disabled woman\, travels the East Coast interviewing voters with disabilities. She asks them about the barriers they face\, from accessing the everyday conveniences that able-bodied people take as a given to the inability to receive the services they need to work and be a part of the community. This short documentary explores how politicians have left behind one of the largest minority groups in the United States\, and what disabled voters want from their next commander in chief. Produced by the National Disability Rights Network in partnership with Disability Rights New York. Directed by Jack Rosen. \nAfter the film\, join a panel discussion featuring Secretary of State Shenna Bellows\, and disability advocates Eric McVay\, Jenny McCarthy\, and Molly Thompson. \nCheck out the trailer for “Accessing Democracy” a documentary short focused on telling politicians what they don’t know about the disability community. The film follows Monica Wiley as she travels the East Coast interviewing fellow voters with disabilities. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required. \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:HCBS Town Hall - Providers\, Advocacy Organizations\, Advisory Groups – Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and/or Autism Population
DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced the Ensuring Access to Medicaid Services Rule (Access Rule). This new rule is designed to make it easier for people to access home and community-based services (HCBS) and to improve the quality of these services. If you receive personal care\, homemaker\, home health services\, or habilitation services such as home support\, work support\, or community support\, this applies to you. The goal is to help people who receive Medicaid HCBS services have better lives and outcomes. \nAt this time\, DHHS would like to invite you to a town hall session to discuss the new CMS Access Rule and its requirements. We will explain the rule\, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on the rule. As part of our planning\, it’s also important for us to hear from you around what is working well and where we can improve. This town hall is the first of several opportunities for you to give input that will help us create a plan to follow the new rule. Please note\, the rule includes elements about other medical services that will be addressed separately by the Office of MaineCare Services (OMS). This session will focus specifically on HCBS programs offered by the Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS). \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:HCBS Town Hall - Providers\, Advocacy Organizations\, Advisory Groups – Older Adults and Adults with Physical Disabilities Population

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Ride Ahead - Maine Jewish Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Film Description:\nSamuel Habib is a typical 21-year-old from New Hampshire\, itching to move out\, start a career\, and find love. But no one tells you how to be an adult\, let alone an adult with a disability. Can a community of disability activists help him follow his dreams? \nThe film follows Samuel Habib\, whose goals are pretty typical for a 21-year-old. Moving out of his family’s home. College. Establishing his career. Dating. Sex. Yet every rite of passage is fraught with challenges. Unexpected seizures and uncontrollable movements caused by his rare genetic disorder. Friends’ homes that are inaccessible to his wheelchair. His labored speech and use of a communication device are barriers to a social life. He craves more independence and a family of his own one day. “But no one tells you how to be an adult\,” he says\, “let alone an adult with a disability.” Samuel is determined to avoid the statistical realities: unemployment\, isolation\, institutionalization. A turning point comes when he starts talking to disabled adults\, who have been through all he is going through now. And when he begins to channel their insights\, a roadmap for himself\, and for other young adults like him\, begins to take shape. \nAbout The Maine Jewish Film Festival:\nThe Maine Jewish Film Festival celebrates filmmaking—inspiring conversation through the lens of global Jewish experience. Innovative programming invites a diverse statewide audience into the dialogue. As one of Maine’s premier cultural organizations\, we pursue partnerships and collaborations with other cultural and community organizations across the state. For more information about MJFF\, please visit www.mjff.org \nAccessibility Information:\nThe film includes open captions. The venue is accessible for wheelchairs/mobility impaired persons. Please note that there is limited handicapped-accessible parking at the venue. Guests are asked to plan accordingly. \nTickets are $15. For more information\, email mjffdirector@gmail.com or call 202-419-9952.
