Job Location: Falmouth or Augusta, with flexibility for remote work options. This position includes regular travel throughout Maine.
Disability Rights Maine, a progressive non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure autonomy, inclusion, equality, and access for people with disabilities in Maine, has an opening for a Voting Access Advocate to join our Access Team.
DRM is seeking a detail-oriented individual who is committed to enforcing and enhancing the rights of people with disabilities and who possesses strong interpersonal skills to interview people with disabilities, providers and family members in a variety of settings.
The Voting Access Advocate will be responsible for supporting engagement and mobilization of voters with disabilities through virtual and in-person outreach and trainings, emails, website content development, blog posts, and social media postings.
This position requires an individual with a passion for voting access and voting rights who is eager to work in a fast-paced environment, to ensure that voting is accessible to all Maine people with disabilities. The ideal candidate will have experience in elections or voting access or the electoral process. The ability to balance and prioritize competing priorities and to create written and verbal content in plain language is essential.
- Support individuals with disabilities to resolve disputes and enforce their voting rights through representation in negotiations and meetings;
- Train people with disabilities on voting rights;
- Train election officials statewide on voting access for people with disabilities;
- Represent the interest of people with disabilities on various boards and commissions;
- Register people to vote in Maine;
- Design accessible content about voting rights in Maine;
- Establish and maintain meaningful relationships with community partners and organizations to further programmatic goals and outreach efforts to better serve voters with disabilities;
- Educate policymakers about accessibility issues in Maine’s voting program;
- Draft written resources and related web content, including social media postings, about voting laws and updates;
- Contribute to the creation and execution of programmatic goals and projects;
- Regularly communicate with the local and State Board of Elections offices, and other agencies responsible for enforcing rights of voters with disabilities;
- Collaborate in cross-program projects and outreach efforts to further organizational advocacy goals;
- Keep up-to-date about voting and civil rights issues that impact people with disabilities during elections;
- Engage with elected officials and candidates to raise awareness about disability issues;
- Organize files, update existing online content and voting rights resources, and research changes in local, Maine, and Federal election systems, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree or other relevant life experience.
- The ability to master regulations and policy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- The ability to develop and pursue innovative high impact advocacy strategies.
- A commitment to economic and social justice.
General knowledge of Maine’s election system, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) preferred.
Salary Range: $42k-50k
