Mental Health Advocate

Disability Rights Maine, a progressive non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure autonomy, inclusion, equality, and access for people with disabilities in Maine, has an opening an advocate to join our mental health advocacy team.

The duties will include extensive outreach into the community in order to provide individuals with advocacy in both institutional and community based settings including peer centers, clubhouses, group homes, shelters, hospitals, and mental health provider agencies.

Duties will also include working on systemic projects designed to advance the rights of individuals living with psychiatric labels throughout Maine. Projects will include developing and presenting rights trainings statewide and assisting in investigations of allegations of abuse, neglect or exploitation.

Qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree or relevant life experience; experience working with individuals with psychiatric labels; the ability to develop and pursue effective advocacy strategies; and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of professionals and a commitment to economic, racial and social justice, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will be expected to execute projects with a high degree of independence, while working within DRM’s team-oriented atmosphere. This position includes regular travel throughout Maine.
