SUMMARY:PSG Health Self-Advocacy Training
DESCRIPTION:The Peer Support Group will be gathering on April 29th from 10-11am! Location: GBSD Cafe\, at the ME Educational Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing. Peer Support Group (PSG) is a monthly gathering for adults with intellectual & developmental disabilities who use signs and gestures to communicate. \nOn April 29th\, we’ll have a special training on Health Self-Advocacy. Health is important to everyone. Taking care of your health looks different for each of us. Health self-advocacy allows you to take control of your health the way YOU want. This presentation will provide helpful tips to advocate for your health in medical settings. For example\, how to ask your doctor questions\, how to ask for interpreters\, and more. \nFor more info\, contact Michelle Ames mames@drme.org or VP 207-805-7024.

SUMMARY:DOJ Meeting with Children and Families - Portland
DESCRIPTION:The Disability Rights Section of the U.S. Department of Justice recently signed an agreement with Maine that requires the State to make changes to its services for children with behavioral health disabilities.  These changes will give parents\, children\, and young adults (up to their 21st birthday) choices so children and young adults can remain at home with services\, or can return home from facilities and get the services they need. \nThe Department of Justice wants to meet with people who will be impacted by these changes\, including children and young adults (up to their 21st birthday)\, families\, providers\, and advocates. \nThey will be holding an in-person meeting from 4:00–5:30 pm on Tuesday\, April 29\, at the Reiche Community Center\, 166 Brackett Street\, Portland (the entrance to the Community Center is on Clark Street). They will share information and updates about our agreement with Maine and invite you to share your experiences with the State’s behavioral health services for children. \nIf you have any questions about the meeting\, we encourage you to reach out to Margaret Girard\, Margaret.Girard@usdoj.gov.
