What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, software, equipment or product that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities.

Examples of AT include:

  • Mobility devices, like wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers
  • Braille and Braille displays, magnifiers, voice-to-text and text-to-voice software
  • Hearing aids and cochlear implants
  • Hand controls in a vehicle
  • Grab chairs
  • Other technology needed to help somebody with a disability live as independently as possible.
